My name is Luan Wright! I am a normal 17 year old boy, looking forward to my final year in school. Year 12! What a big year this is going to be. I am a student at Como Secondary College and in the school’s Golf Academy program here in Perth, and this year I will be representing the golf academy as Senior Captain!
I love the outdoors, fishing, golf and any sport under the sun! I enjoy the simple things in life and love my family to bits! I have big aspirations for the future and hope to go to university next year.
On a fateful Friday morning, during the last week of November 2016, everything changed. After having difficulties with my eye sight for about two weeks, I was writing my final year 11 exams, when the double vision started. The double vision made it impossible for me to read my exam papers, as the words and numbers drifted apart in front of my eyes, but I finished my exams as best I could. The double vision got worse; I became really sick at school with severe headaches. Not knowing what was going on, my parents took me to an eye specialist who confirmed that there was nothing wrong with my eyes. An urgent MRI was organised, but before we could get there, I became really sick at school with vomiting and severe headaches. Mum had to pick me up earlier that Friday afternoon and take me straight to the emergency room at Sir Charles Gairdner hospital. Things happened so fast.
I was taken for a CT scan which confirmed the worst – there was a big tumor like mass filling my brain cavity around my brainstem and the growing pressure was causing the symptoms in my eyes. I was admitted into the High dependency Neurosurgical Unit at SCGH. It was a very stressful time for us, as we did not know what to make of the initial diagnosis, as it all happened so fast. My neurosurgeon, Mr Lam, came to see me and my parents to explain to us what we were possibly up against. After the MRI, Mr Lam told us what the diagnosis was, confirming that I had a diffuse midline glioma. The tumour was fast filling the entire cavity through which my brain fluids would normally drain, and initial surgery was the only way to combat this. I was very scared as the Dr’s were very clear about the possible complications of opening my skull and working on my brain – but I also realised that this was the only way to relieve some of the pressure.
I went for surgery early on the Monday morning and a biopsy was taken of the tumour to confirm my diagnosis. This was very challenging for me as I have never been a sick or unwell person, and suddenly I had to rely on others to help me with basic things. But I was determined to get better and go home, which I did a couple of days later. The tube in my brain, helped drain the fluid build up and my eyes became slightly better 🙂
Over the next six weeks, whilst all my friends were on holiday, my parents nursed me back to health and desperately researched all information they could find about this tumour and the possible treatments available. I changed my entire diet to be one of many veggies and fruits and am doing everything I can to give my body the best possible change to beat this thing. Unfortunately I had to be on steroids and anti-seizure meds to prevent me from having seizures and to decrease the pressure on my brain – I had to stop this later as the side effects were really severe and I had a bad reaction to the medication which made me look as if I had 2nd degree burns to my face.
Early in January we saw the oncologists who confirmed that we did not have many options with this tumour due to its type and location in my brain. Chemo and radiation would not be seen as a viable option and unless we could shrink or remove the tumour (which nobody in Perth was willing to attempt due to its location and possible complications), there was not much more the medical team could do for me:-(.
We came to hear about Prof. Charlie Teo, who is a world renowned Neurosurgeon who deals with these types of tumours every day. Mum and Dad decided to, despite the odds; send my medical file to his team for review and we were delighted to hear that they may be able to help. After a massive fundraising campaign, the wonderful support of family, friends and people we didn’t even know, assisted me to go for surgery in Sydney to try and remove as much of this tumour as possible.
Even though I was terrified of the surgery and the possible complications, this was possibly my best and only option that could save my life, or at least buy me some time to find alternative treatment options.
Dr Charlie Teo did what he could, but unfortunately, much of the tumour remained. My eye sight improved for about a day, and then my eye’s “got a mind of their own again”. Now, a couple of week’s post-surgery, things are pretty tough. You see, the tumour is pressing on my optic nerve and filling the limited space in my brain, pressing my brain against a non-compliant vault.
Day before the surgery
Day after surgery
I struggle to keep control over my voluntary eye movements and I cannot see more than 30 cm in front of me. My coordination isn’t so good at the moment and I sometimes suffer from severe anxiety attacks due to loud unexpected sounds and noises. We all find this really challenging and distressing, as even though I constantly wear noise cancelling head phones going out of the house has become near-impossible.
My friends are really great, but they also find it hard, as I am certainly not much fun at the moment – some days I feel really lonely, and find myself hoping that this is all just a bad dream.
My parents are doing continuous research and are desperately trying to find the best way forward. They don’t have all the answers, but are trying so hard!
After going for surgery, we were advised of many different trails for brain cancers, but unfortunately not one that I could join, due to my age, type of tumour or other selection criteria that my case did not meet. We were referred to many different doctors and discussed many different treatment options, but due to my type of tumour and the location there off, very little evidence exists that would support any specific treatment options for a otherwise lethal tumour.
After literally searching day and night, and with the help of some great local doctors who all try their best to get us to the right places, we have been able to locate a multi-disciplinary specialised cancer team overseas that has treatment options available that has good evidence of success.
As with the surgery done by Dr Charlie Teo, this comes at a great out of pocket cost which is overwhelming if you think about it! But if we have learnt anything from this situation, we know that money is nothing when compaired with the possibility of life. We remain hopeful that we can get the extra money together so that I can have the opportunity of this treatment, that will target my specific cancer cells and get rid of this tumour for once and for all!
Before I can have this treatment, we would have to raise a considerable amount of money.
With your help and donations, we were able to buy some time with surgery. Everyone has been so great and I would not have had this life changing chance if it wasnt for you! But if we have any chance of killing what is left of this monster, I would have to ask for your help once again. It is a costly journey, but the only option we have. I know this is a lot to ask, but we cannot do this without your help.
Please continue to help me get rid of this monster once and for all, by donating in any way possible to you. I will continue to fight and truly believe that I will be back to tell you all about it!
For ever hopeful.

Good evening everyone It is with deep regret and sadness that I need to inform you, that Luan sadly passed away on Monday night, 27 March 2017. Luan, his family and everyone who supported him, did everything possible to beat this debilitating cancer, and even though the effects of the growing tumor threw all sorts of challenges his way, Luan smiled and fought until the very end. Luan was particularly excited about the possibility to receive international treatment with some great-recorded outcomes, from highly specialized Doctors and he fully understood the urgency in receiving this treatment. Charles, Elna and Luan embarked on this very challenging journey and flight, on Wednesday evening, with the hope that they had enough time to start the treatment on Monday. Unfortuntially, Luan started experiencing increased seizures, due to intra cranial pressure, which ultimately led to him having a fatal stroke on Monday evening. We would like to thank every single person who has been part of his journey. To all the kids from his school, his friends, his family, his community and everyone who did not even know Luan, yet prayed for him and donated to his cause. Someone put it so nicely and said that Luan brought everyone together to show compassion, to believe, to pray, to hope and to have faith. He made us all believe in human kindness and compassion again and somehow connected people who never knew of each other. Luan will finally be laid to rest on Friday the 7th of April at the Gosnell’s Golf Club in Canning Vale, Perth – his second home. The service will be at 11:00am and is open to anyone wishing to pay his or her final respect to this incredible young man. Our hearts are broken with his family, as he leaves some huge prints on all our hearts. Much love and appreciation, Susan (On behalf of the Wright Family)

Good morning everyone, Hope you are all very well! It has been over 3 months now and Luan is getting closer to his next step in treatment. Some great effort has gone into ensuring that his body is in tiptop condition to give him a good chance for success! That is off course, what we are praying for. Luan is still suffering with debilitating nausea and some big vomits, but powers through them so well. He has had a couple of falls (more frequently now), due to his balance center not functioning as good as it could. But all and all, he is doing well – or at least makes it look that way. Thank you to Luan’s mates who comes to visit him every now and then – without your wonderful support it would be such a lonely journey for him as he cant go out of the house much at the moment. We know it isn’t easy for you to see your Champion friend like this, but he is most definitely trying to get better for you all. The lovely Kalgoorlie group has once again fund raised for Luan over the weekend! They even made T shirts with a bar code directly linking funds raised to his Chuffed account! What an awesome community you are! Thank you for raising an incredible $1134 on the weekend that will most definitely help get Luan around to his treatment. Thank you also goes to all Luan’s new supporters, who has kindly donated on Luan’s page. Please keep the wheel turning for Luan. Have a lovely week and I will be sure to keep you all updated with another update next week. Susan (on behalf of the Wright Family)

Good afternoon everyone! WOW, it feels like ages since we have last sent you an update. Not that things have been settling down – in fact, there has been many fundraising events held for Luan, which is fantastic and continues to blow the Wright Family away! First, and update on Luan: Luan has been so brave over the last couple of weeks. In some ways it is going better with him, but in others not so great. Luan has started experiencing some really uncomfortable hiccups from time to time and some days are filled with nausea and vomiting. But Luan seems to be in a good headspace and soldering on, although most of his days are spent on his bed where he is free from noise, fast movements and where he is comfortable. His family has now done all their homework and has a couple of things to sort out before they can take him for the next part of his treatment plan. In the mean time, they are fully aware that time is of the essence and have started with the best possible home care available, to enable that his body is in the best possible condition before starting his treatment. As we have mentioned before, there are no guarantees but certainly great outcomes from previous patients with similar condition. A couple of weekends ago, the Gosnell’s Golf Club fundraised an entire day, with all contributions going to the Wright Family. For logistical reasons the money could not be transferred into the Chuffed account but an incredible $13 200 were raised for Luan! Luan went along to this day, as long as he was able to, and smiled like a champion with all the boys! This weekend coming, the wonderful Kalgoorlie crowd will be fundraising yet again, and this will help greatly to make sure he gets to his next phase of treatment in the next few weeks. In addition to this, Luan’s great Bro (Ivan Wright) and his work crowd from “IFLY Indoor Sky Diving Perth” have all sponsored their flight hours, to create an awesome price for a raffle, enabling some lucky people, to win a piece of the 8 hours worth of tunnel to be won! How awesome is this! Great effort boys! Thank you again for all your prayers, thoughts, contributions and well wishes. Without this, this journey would have been a very lonely and impossible one! Luan has not given up – nor should we. Please continue to share if you can! Susan (On behalf of the Wright Family)

This update was posted two days ago but somehow did not go through to emails. Here with the update again – the fundraising is today! Good evening to all! Just a quick update to let you know that we are kicking off the second part of Luan’s campaign tomorrow! Luan is very excited, but also humbled at the same time, as his friends have organized a Golf Day in his honor, to help him raise the money needed for the next part of his journey: AKA “DESTROY THE MONSTER”!! Even though this does not come with any guarantees, this treatment has great potential, supported by the best evidence currently available for his specific tumor. It, once again, comes at a great expense. How do you compare life with money? We will, sure as nuts, give it a good crack and try to meet Luan halfway to give him the best possible chance!! Should you live in Perth, be sure to keep an eye out for Channel 7 news on Sunday evening, as they have requested to do a follow up interview with Luan, and will do this at the Golf event on Sunday (please keep Luan in your thoughts and prayers for this, as he finds going outside, exposed to noises and sudden movement, extremely stressful as his brain responds by going into “overdrive” due to the over stimulation of his senses). If you don’t have Channel 7 Perth, no worries, I will be sure to upload the link again, so that you can watch. All we can ask is that you do your magic and SHARE Luan’s story once again (which you will note have been updated to reflect his recent surgery). You have been incredibly vital in Luan’s journey thus far! And we thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Together we can do this!

12 February 2017 – UPDATE Good morning everyone, Wow, what a week this has been! The Wright family has been here there and everywhere, trying to meet up with health care workers, see Doctors and Skype specialist overseas, on a daily basis. They have to make a decision regarding Luan’s treatment very fast and will be able to do so after the final Skype consultation on Tuesday. All the options are costly and unfortunately not available locally. Even the Doctors in Perth have advised treatment overseas. With some days being good and some being extraordinarily challenging, it would appear that the Wright family might have found something that is actually associated with evidence of success. It is incredibly costly – but how do you compare cost to life? In the mean time we are continuing to fund raise on every level possible! The Gosnells’ Golf Club has organized a special golf day, in order to fundraise for Luan. So if you are golf phonetic, and happens to reside in Perth – be tempted to come along and join in this day on the 19th of February! Thank you to everyone else, every community and every person, who has organized events to help Luan in his fight for survival (Kalgoorlie rocks!) I know Luan’s surgery is over, and this has bought us valuable time, but please continue to share, as this journey is far from over! And as I know Luan, VERY far from over! Thank you again for your awesome support! God bless you all! Susan (on behalf of the Wright Family)

7 Feb 2017 – Update Luan flew back to Perth on Sunday the 5th of February after spending his 17th birthday in Sydney. On his birthday Luan sounded really great and in his own words said: “I am feeling better every day”. Luan was brave enough to make the best of his time in Sydney, under the circumstance, and to go and meet the famous Bondi Beach Life guards. Even though exhausting, Luan was well geared with his noise cancelling headphones and eye patch to help alleviate his neurological symptoms, and ended up really enjoying this experience. Thank you Australia, South Africa, Africa, America and the UK for making this possible! (Hope I didnt forget someone) The last couple of days, Luan has been struggling with increased anxiety and his eyes remain unchanged. Putting this all in perspective though – Luan has been through allot! He has just been through some pretty intense brain surgery, sometime in ICU, a night or two in Sydney away from his own home and a relatively long and challenging flight back to Perth. Luan remains hopeful that in a couple of days or a few weeks, after all the swelling is gone, his eyes would improve, and we surely pray this with him and his family. For now, the mammoth task of deciding the way forward, the best possible treatment option, the financial implications and the evidence based outcomes of any treatment, remains a reality for the Wright family. Luan isn’t feeling all that great at the moment, and needs all the support and love he can get! Keeping hope alive is of the essence here – and we can all continue to do whatever lies within our God given talents, to help this young man. Whether that is a prayer, a thought, a kind word or a financial contribution – they are all equally as needed! So let’s keep it coming! Luan – we are all in this with you! Keep hope young man! You are a champion! Susan (on behalf of the Wright Family)

The last couple of days, Luan has been struggling with increased anxiety and his eyes remain unchanged.

Friday 3 February 2017 – Update Yesterday was a long and emotional day for the Wright family. There are so many up’s and down’s on this journey that I think it is impossible to describe all the emotions the Wright family experiences, daily. Luan, Charles and Elna have to constantly make decisions around Luan’s care which may or may not make a difference in his quality of life. Reality: Luan’s surgery went well, under the circumstances, and his young body is in the most perfect condition to tackle any treatment. The family is faced with the reality though, that there still remains a fairly large piece of tumour that could not be removed, and needs to be destroyed somehow. The family is now starting the process of seeking assistance in his further management. Swelling on Luan’s brain (post-surgery) is still quite fresh and it is not yet possible to determine if his eye sight is any better, but we are very hopeful that this would improve in the next week or so. BUT DONT FORGET… LUAN IS A CHAMPION – and he has the support of thousands of people across the world! He is truly a super boy who continues to encourage others and who chooses to be encouraged by others. Loosing hope is not an option for this young man, even though it seems like such a natural thing to do. Luan is truly thankful (and continues to be in awe), of everyone’s support and generosity! People all over the world is sending messages of well wishes and assisting this family with the incredible financial burden of this sudden turn in their lives. We cannot thank you all enough and without your support, Luan would not have had a fighting change. The good news for today: Luan will be celebrating his 17th birthday tomorrow! And guess what – he will be OUT OF HOSPITAL! Yippee!! He will probably be strong enough to fly home next week and start urgent treatment to fight what is left. Dr Charlie Teo has referred the family to some great people who is all working together to find the best way forward for Luan. With a very thankful heart Susan (on behalf of the Wright family)

Morning everyone A big hello from ET:-) Young Luan is smiling this morning, hanging out for his breakfast! He is doing really well. Just a little reflection A week ago, Elna and Charles told us that Dr Charlie was willing to see Luan and do 100% more than anyone else was able/willing to – to give him a go! With the excitement was the reality that they did not have the financial capacity to make this happenL. A week later, Luan has had his surgery, and we have raised an incredible amount of money, that made this possible! It makes the saying true: “how do you eat an elephant? A bite at a time”! We just needed to start somewhere.. The journey forward is still a long and costly one, but this is a fantastic start! With renewed energy and hope, Luan can start his journey to fight what is left of this tumour. Today’s MRI will give us more information as to what is left to deal with, although the operation went better than expected. In Dr Charlie’s words: “the environment was favourable to operate, and we could take more than expected”. Even though Dr Charlie was really honest about his inability to restore Luan’s vision (due to the location of the tumour and risks involved), even this went better than expected and we are very hopeful that some of his vision will be restored after the swelling goes down. As expected, Luan will have to work hard alongside the physiotherapy team, to restore his power in his legs and arms, but got up and walked this morning! What a trooper! We are so close, but not quite there yet. Please do your magic and continue to share!

Hi everyone Just a very quick update. Luan is out of theatre and still waking up slowly, but all went well. I will be able to give you more of an update in the morning. He is currently in ICU but stable and in good spirit. Thank you so much for every prayer, positive thought and word of encouragement! And of course, for your generosity. We have hit the $44000 mark! Only $11000 off our target. I know that there are many fundraising events going on and we are doing everything we can to help! Have a good evening.

Good morning everyone, Thank you so much for your donations – we have been given grace until Friday this week to settle the initial out of pocket cost. Even though we have not made the full amount yet, it is still going up which means all your shares are working – please keep it going! Luan is in theatre as we speak! Every prayer, thought, positive vibe and donation is so incredibly important now. Even though Dr Charlie said that this tumor is one of only 20 cases he has done before, we pray for the best outcome for brave Luan. On the way to the airport, I told Luan how people were touched by his story and how his story is bringing a community together – where many people lost hope in humanity, he somehow restored this. He just smiled and thought deaply. He mentioned how he was flooded by well wishes and success stories from other brain tumor survivors, and patients of Dr Charlie – this really gave him the courage to continue on with this difficult journey. I will keep you updated as to how things go. Much love to all! Susan (On behalf of the Wright Family)

Good morning Luan and his parents made it safely to Sydney on the redeye flight – and they are well and truly red-eye now! The flight went really well and we are so thankful of this. Last night, Luan was so excited! Terrified to, I am sure, but he only showed his excitement. They are currently in Dr Teo’s rooms waiting to see him. Oh the anticipation! We have now reached an incredible 66% of our target! Thank you all so much. We are hoping to get the message out to more people today as our hope is to be able to keep Luan in Sydney for his surgery (if that is what Dr Charlie suggests). I will keep you posted. PLEASE DEAR FRIENDS – LETS NAIL THIS TARGET AND KEEP LUAN IN SYDNEY! With thanks in awe!

Good morning everyone! WOW! After last night’s 7 News program, we have had a flood of lovely messages and people opening their hearts. Luan was exhausted after a very busy day, but so incredibly grateful when he saw his story and how people responded to this (he was so nervous about the interview, but did it so well). If you have a moment, have a look in the West Australian (P.18) for a little article about Luan’s story. Today the Wright family is preparing their journey to Sydney (midnight tonight), and the very uncertain road ahead. The flight in itself has its difficulties with Luan’s senses being over stimulated at the moment, making his hearing extremely sensitive. There for, with noise cancelling headphones, and the medication he needs, we pray for a good flight and energy to push through a very long day. We will continue to keep you updated from here on forward. It may not be every day – but at least once a week. Thank each and every one of you, for your incredible support and donations. Please keep sharing Luan’s story, as we are not quite there yet, but we know we can do this! Special thanks to Geof Parry from 7 News who did an incredible job with the interview and who made Luan feel so at ease and comfortable. Good morning everyone, This morning we have reached more than 30% of our target! Allthough Luan is generally quite these days, when asked how this made him feel and what he would like to say to you all his words were: “I really appreciate everyone’s openess of heart, towards me, even if you dont know me. I really need the surgery quickly, so just want to say a big thank you to everyone for your help and your kindness, I appreciate it very much”. We have had an incredible amount of views allready (3454) and could not have dont this without you. Thank you so so much for your support, each share, each donation and each comment! It is so humbling to see people’s generosity. Thank you also for the schools, churches and every other organisation who was willing to share Luan’s story on their websites and newsletters! You are all awesome!

Good morning everyone Just a quick update: Thank you so much for your continued support and sharing Luan’s story. We have reached 20% of our target in 24 hours and we do believe that with your continued support, we can get Luan’s surgery done! Things have been moving really fast for Luan in the last couple of days – unfortunately his symptoms are also becoming more severe, very fast. We are praying for a good flight to Sydney late on Monday night, in order to see Prof. Charlie Teo early Tuesday morning. Luan really suffers when traveling, with severe anxiety and the pressure on his brain that causes many involuntary movements, which is terrifying for such a young, normally healthy young man. But he is such a brave young man and if asked would say: “I am ok, thank you”. Luan’s parents and big bro are hanging on and staying positive and seeing your generosity, and reading your comments, gives them the strength they need in times that they feel so helpless. Please continue to share Luan’s story with all your wonderful family and friends – please remember that even if people cant donate, if they just share, it is bound to get to someone who would be able to 🙂 God bless you all! Susan (on behalf of the Wright Family)

Good morning everyone Today we are in absolute awe about people’s generosity. Even in their own circumstances, they are willing to donate and share to help give Luan a fighting chance! This is a clip of Dr Charlie Teo, the brave surgeon who is willing to give Luan a chance. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Please keep sharing wide and far! We can do this! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeC4dHVMCfU&feature=youtu.be Feel free to keep the comments coming – Luan can read these and it keeps him strong! May you all be blessed. Dr Charlie Teo operated not long ago on my brother getting 95% of his tumour out. This has helped him with symptoms and is now getting chemo to stop what is left. Like you no one in Perth wanted to operate! You are in great hand with Teo and his team. Wishing you a speedy recovery after the op:)
